What should a toddler wear to bed?
The Lullaby Trust recommends a room temperature of 16–20°C for babies. Above that, use fewer layers and a lower tog; below it, add a layer.

Sleeping bag tog by room temperature
| Room temperature | Grobag tog | Described as |
|---|---|---|
| 24°C and above | 0.2 tog | hot nights |
| 20–24°C | 1.0 tog | warm nights |
| 16–20°C | 2.5 tog | cool to warm nights |
| 16°C and below | 3.5 tog | cold nights |
Tommee Tippee says to choose by the temperature of the bedroom, not the weather outside, and to use a room thermometer. Grobags are sized by weight and height: 6–18 months from 8.2 kg, 18–36 months from 11.3 kg. Don't use a sleeping bag together with a duvet or blanket, and stop using one once your child can climb out of the cot.
What to wear at each temperature
| Room temperature | What the guidance says |
|---|---|
| Below 16°C | Add a layer or use a higher tog sleeping bag (Lullaby Trust). Grobag suggests 3.5 tog at 16°C and below. |
| 16–20°C | The recommended range. A lightweight, well-fitting sleeping bag or light bedding is comfortable (Lullaby Trust). |
| 20–24°C | Warmer than recommended: fewer layers. Lullaby Trust says a lightweight layer such as a short-sleeve bodysuit is fine in hot weather. Grobag: 1.0 tog. |
| 24–27°C and above | Hot. A short-sleeve vest or even just a nappy is fine (Lullaby Trust). Grobag: 0.2 tog. Open a window and the door if it’s safe. |
How to check
- Feel the chest or back of the neck. Hands and feet are usually cooler, which is normal.
- Hot or sweaty: remove a layer of clothing or bedding.
- Chest feels cold: add a layer or use a higher tog bag.
- Take hats off indoors (Lullaby Trust).
- Don't double up two sleeping bags: air trapped between layers makes them warmer than the two togs added together.
If the heating is on all night, the Lullaby Trust says keep it low, and certainly no higher than 20°C.
Older toddlers in a bed
Once your child is over 12 months and in a bed with a duvet, the same idea applies. The 16–20°C figure is for babies, but it's a reasonable target for toddlers too: dress them in pyjamas, and go lighter on the duvet when the room is warm. Duvet togs by age: what tog duvet for a toddler. Pyjama sizes: kids’ pyjama sizes.
